MOIC MONTHLY UPDATE

 

CHINA TRIP:

 On 25th April, MoIC Ajmal Ahmady traveled to China; he   delivered a speech in (Tsinghua) university in Beijing. He  discussed the goal of China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, he had a meeting with AIIB Vice President Joachim von Amsberg, Senior Advisor to Chief Programing Officer and Senior Policy and Strategy Officer and discussed (1) The Bank’s development cooperation with Afghanistan, (2) Initiation of the Bank’s investment in Afghanistan (3) Concrete steps for funding initiation.  At the end he had meetings with representatives of Afghan traders discussed (1) MoIC plans and reforms in business environment, (2) Export and investment opportunities and (3) Listening to suggestions and concerns of them.

 

 


DUBAI TRIP:

On 13 April, Mr. Ajmal Ahmady attended Dubai Mining Conference, where he gave a speech on new Minerals Law and restructuring of natural resources sector. Mr. Ahmady met a UAE leading agro processing firm and discussed investment in Afghanistan. During the meeting issues of foreign investments in Afghanistan has been raised by Mr. Ahmady and the investors were encouraged to visit Afghanistan and conduct their business activities in Afghanistan too – giving a brief description of the agricultural business opportunities to the UAE investors. Afghanistan’s agricultural business has been carried out mostly in a very basic and traditional way and the entire process requires a modern use of technology and machines, therefore Mr. Ahmady during his trip to Dubai has also thoroughly discussed to bring the contemporary agricultural technology that can help Afghan farmers advance their knowledge of new agricultural practice.


International Meetings


In the meeting with Belarus Minister of Industries and Commerce Mr. Pavel Utuipin on 4 April, Minister Ajmal Ahmadi discussed on trade, air corridor, holding exhibitions, experimental shipment, feasibility of building a joint Afghan-Belarusian tractor manufacturing company in Afghanistan and joint investment and expanding economic cooperation between both the countries. Support on full application of GSP scheme in the framework of Eurasian Customs Union for Afghanistan’s Export has also been requested.


 


Large Businesses: Meetings


Mr. Ajmal Ahmady had a discussion over lunch with 4 Afghan leading investors and traders in various sectors including Flour, Uniform Design, Pipe and Marble. The meeting probed customs’ challenges, market place for domestic products, export of marble stone, and concerns over sending payments to Iran goods though bank.  Also Mr. Ahmadi at the sideline of his trip to China met with representatives of Afghan traders discussed (1) MoIC plans and reforms in business environment, (2) Export and investment opportunities and (3) Listening to suggestions and concerns of them

 

 


Press Conferences and Interviews


The MoIC Ajmal Ahmadi held a press conference on Aril 10 2019 at GMIC. Mr. Ahmadi in the “Accountability to the Nation” session briefed the local and international media with MoIC’s achievement and issues in trade, industry and business environment. Mr. Ahmadi discussed the problems on trade balance, increase of export level from $550M to $875M , Air Corridor, Road Corridor, ports  and regional cooperation. Further information on industries was provided that include (1) industrial parks, (2) factory visits, and (3) meetings with unions. Details have also been given on reforms in business environment, operational reforms at ACBR, reforms to One-Stop Shop center.
