July 29, 2021

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the World Trade Organization celebrate the 5th anniversary of the membership of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in WTO.

The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the last member of the WTO to become a 164th member on July 29, 2016, after a long period of membership negotiations (12 years).

Notwithstanding, the capacity constraints that Afghanistan, as a less developed (LDC), vulnerable and war-affected country, has demonstrated its commitment to integration into the multilateral trade system and the global economy and as the shining example for the participation of other less developed countries.

Celebrating the 5th anniversary of Afghanistan's membership provides a good opportunity to reflect on the results of the first years of Afghanistan's membership in the organization, the important and positive effects and achievements of its accession, and the challenges ahead, including recent challenges, examining the coronavirus epidemic effects and exchange views with members of the organization and partner for future development, to maximize the benefits expected from Afghanistan's presence in WTO.
